“Sonic Under Glass” - Sonic the Hedgehog #16
We start with a fake out opening where Robotnik has, presumably, been defeated.
But it turns out it was all an insidious plot by Robotnik. They are all trapped within a virtual reality where their dreams come true. Think of that Batman episode Perchance to Dream.
And what are the Freedom Fighters deepest desires?
Well, we actually don’t get see everybody’s dreams individually. I can only assume that Bunnie got her wish to be the royal hairdresser cause here she is helping Sally to get ready for her “wedding”. She also dyed Sally’s hair back to her natural color while she was at, too. ;)
Though why she didn’t wish herself to not be a cyborg anymore is up in the air. Maybe the machine hadn’t gotten around to it, yet? After all it took “six months” in dream time for Sonic and Sally to plan their wedding.
However since we are in the subconscious mind, all of the daemons that have been repressed can now come to the surface unbidden, as well.
Antoine’s crush on Sally has come to the forefront more than ever and he is consumed by his jealousy of Sonic.
And since this machine works on Inception logic all the dreams are being shared and can be influenced by the individuals’ will. Therefore, Antoine messes up the dream trying to achieve his goals.
Robotnik apparently, didn’t count on the Freedom Fighters having competing desires.
So the question remains; if the dreams are shared and the various individuals can change or affect the dreamscape, then what is Sally’s desire?
Cause at first she was more than happy to be with Sonic….
And now here she is, perfectly content making goo-goo eyes at Antoine.
Is the virtual reality affecting her will in order to compensate for Antoine’s meddling? Or perhaps Antoine’s crush isn’t as unrequited as we first thought, and Sally herself isn’t sure yet which guy she likes more? Or maybe the writers were just lazy and didn’t bother to properly define the rules of this dream world.
Anyways, with the help of the dream version of Uncle Chuck, Sonic uses the virtual reality machine to hack into Robotnik’s computer database and control his own robots and free his friends.
And since nothing that happened within the dream reality is brought up ever again I can only guess they either don’t remember or they unanimously agreed not to talk about it.
The last story in the comic has Robotnik committing random crimes in order to find a spy in his organization. It’s the first appearance of Harvey Who, for those of you familiar with the Secret Freedom Fighters.
