The Antoine and Bunnie Retrospective - 22

“That’s the Spirit” - Sonic the Hedgehog #20

So through a series of pseudoscience shenanigans and misunderstandings, everyone thinks Sonic is dead. Including Sonic himself. In reality he’s just invisible.

What we’re focusing on today, is everyone’s reaction to this possibility; particularly Bunnie’s and Antoine’s.

Antoine’s first reaction is to rush to Sally’s aid upon seeing her hurt and upset. Cause he’s a sweetheart, like that. But he stops in his tracks when he hears the news and kinda just stands there in shock for a few moments.

It makes for a nice parallel to issue 234, where Sonic responds very similarly to Antoine’s “death”.

Despite the rivalry they shared, Antoine and Sonic were and are still friends. So obviously Sonic “death” effects him. Antoine honors his lost as a respected comrade in arms.

Bunnie meanwhile, is left to comfort Sally instead. As much as I love Sally’s and Ant’s friendship, it’s only fair to to say that by this point in the comic Bunnie is clearly her best friend. So it makes since that she’s the one providing the most support for her.

However Sally’s not the only one Bunnie comforts in this story.

If you’ve been following along with this retrospective, you’ve probably also notice that the artists have been drawing Bunnie helping Ant out from time to time in the background. Usually when he’s feeling faint or just needs a hand up.

Now you could just chalk it up to Bunnie’s naturally compassionate nature, but given future events it could also be her growing affection for him shining through.

Eventually the invisibility wares off and everything is set to right.

The other story in the comic is a prologue to the Sally Mini-series. Which I won’t be covering here, but it does introduce Geoffrey St. John. Another important player in Antoine’s development.

Geoffrey’s always been a fascinating character to me. In the same way Cool World is a fascinatingly bad movie. Like, objectivity speaking neither are well written, but the choices and behind the scenes stuff concerning them are so bizarre that you can’t help but be entertained by the weirdness of it all. You just sit there curiously wondering what the writers can pull out of their asses next.
